Matcha benefits: what the science says, and doesn't
Matcha gets credited with almost everything. We have been importing it and drinking it daily for years, so this page does something unusual for the sector: it shows you what has been measured in published clinical trials, in whom and for how long, with the PMID of each one so you can check it yourself.
The basics first. Matcha is green tea from shade-grown leaves, milled whole into a very fine powder. Unlike an infusion, where the teabag goes in the bin with most of the nutrients still inside it, with matcha you drink the entire leaf. That is why its numbers per cup are several times those of ordinary green tea.
The five areas that have been studied
1. Cognition and sleep in older adults
The longest published matcha trial appeared in PLoS One in 2024 (Uchida et al., PMID 39213264). It was randomised, double blind and placebo controlled, and it ran for 12 months, not 12 weeks. Ninety-nine adults took part, 64 with subjective cognitive decline and 35 with mild cognitive impairment: 49 took 2 g of matcha a day and 50 took placebo. The primary outcomes, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and the ADCS-ADL scale, did not change significantly. Social acuity measured by facial emotion perception did (difference -1.39; 95% CI -2.78 to 0.002; P = 0.028), and the Pittsburgh sleep index showed only a trend (P = 0.088). An earlier 12 week trial with 61 older adults and 3 g daily, published in Nutrients in 2020 (Sakurai et al., PMID 33256220), found an improvement in MoCA score only in the female subgroup.
2. Attention under acute stress
A randomised placebo-controlled trial published in Nutrition Research in 2021 (Baba et al., PMID 33744591) gave 2 g of matcha a day for two weeks to 42 adults aged 25 to 34. Stress was induced with the Uchida-Kraepelin test. Reaction times in the Stroop test were significantly shorter in the matcha group and accuracy in the emotion perception task increased; no other test showed a difference. On cortisol, the published data point is a different one: a resistance training trial in Nutrition Journal in 2023 (Shigeta et al., PMID 37403052) measured salivary cortisol in healthy untrained men taking 1.5 g of matcha twice a day for 12 weeks.
3. Skin: two trials, and both are worth reading to the end
The literature here is less flattering than the usual retelling. A randomised, double blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Dermatologic Surgery in 2005 (Chiu et al., PMID 16029678) assigned 40 women with moderate photoageing to eight weeks of 10% green tea cream plus 300 mg orally twice a day: there were no significant differences in the clinical assessment, although biopsies did show better elastic tissue content (p < 0.05). A second trial in the same journal, over two years, with 56 women aged 25 to 75 taking 250 mg of oral polyphenols twice daily (Janjua et al., PMID 19469799), saw improvement in sun damage at 6 months and in erythema at 12, but the authors conclude that at 24 months it was not superior to placebo. 4. Blood lipids and blood pressure
What exists are meta-analyses of green tea, not of matcha. A systematic review of 31 randomised trials with 3,321 subjects published in Nutrition Journal in 2020 (Xu et al., PMID 32434539) measured a mean difference of -4.66 mg/dL in total cholesterol (95% CI -6.36 to -2.96) and -4.55 mg/dL in LDL (95% CI -6.31 to -2.80) against control, with no change in HDL or triglycerides. A meta-analysis of 13 studies in the European Journal of Nutrition in 2014 (Khalesi et al., PMID 24861099) measured -2.08 mm Hg systolic and -1.71 mm Hg diastolic. These are small figures, and they rest on sustained daily intake.
5. How much EGCG there is, which is a different question
The dominant catechin in matcha is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The figure quoted everywhere comes from an analytical paper published in the Journal of Chromatography A in 2003 (Weiss and Anderton, PMID 14518774), from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs: they quantified five catechins and the caffeine content of matcha by micellar electrokinetic chromatography and measured, in milligrams per gram of dry leaf, an EGCG concentration 137 times higher than the green tea China Green Tips, and at least three times higher than the highest published value for other green teas. Be precise about what that is: analytical chemistry on dry leaf against one specific tea. No participants, and no measurement of any effect in people.

Note the detail almost nobody mentions: a bowl is 6 calories and zero sugar. What turns matcha into a calorific drink is whatever gets poured in afterwards.
Caffeine, yes, but without the jitters
A bowl of matcha (2 g) contains around 48 mg of caffeine, roughly half a 240 ml cup of coffee. Matcha also carries L-theanine, an amino acid characteristic of the tea leaf that coffee does not contain. On that combination, a systematic review with meta-analysis of 50 randomised trials in healthy people published in Nutrition Reviews in 2025 (Payne et al., PMID 40314930) measured attention and mood tests in the first and second hour after intake; the authors themselves stress that the confidence intervals leave both the direction and the size of the effect in doubt. Does organic matter?
With matcha, more than with almost any other food: you drink the whole milled leaf, so any pesticide residue goes straight into the bowl, with no filter and no teabag in between. What is matcha good for, in short?
As a concentrated source of catechins, L-theanine and caffeine, because you drink the whole milled leaf. On effects in people there are randomised trials published on attention after stress (PMID 33744591), cognition and sleep over 12 months in older adults (PMID 39213264), sleep and mental wellbeing (PMID 39275223) and blood lipids (PMID 32434539). Each measured different things in different populations.
How many bowls of matcha can I drink a day?
One to three bowls of 2 g each is a sensible range for most adults: 48 to 144 mg of caffeine, well short of the 400 mg daily reference used by health authorities. If you are caffeine sensitive, avoid it after mid afternoon.
Does matcha have contraindications?
Those of caffeine: caution in pregnancy, uncontrolled hypertension, severe anxiety or interaction with certain medicines. One more detail worth knowing: drink it away from main meals if you are anaemic, because tannins hinder iron absorption. When in doubt, your doctor decides.

How do matcha and ordinary green tea differ?
The compounds are the same, the dose is not. Because you drink the whole milled leaf, a bowl of matcha delivers several times more catechins, L-theanine and nutrients than an infusion of green tea, where most of it stays in the discarded leaf.
